artist residency in Montefiore Conca

Montefiore Conca. Again in my blog another post has this setting.
I have been spending here two very intense weeks in a wonderful artist residency – thanks to Opificio della Rosa.
The printmaking laboratory is built up in a corner of the Middle Age castle of Montefiore and I shared it with a German artist from UK, Thomas Gosebruch.

the printmaking lab in the castle

We got on very well, he was carving wood with his Tonkita machine while I drawned my etchings in Copper Solphate. And it was really a great chance to show him my work and hearing his opinion. Idea exchange is always a great way of growing up: I really believe in talking together, even if your work is very different.
Also, at night we went for walks near the wood together and looked for owls in the surroundings: one night we finally saw one flying toward us!

I worked 2 whole weeks on my project about forest and animals: the trees were made by overlapping different etchings, and adding the animals at the very end: I realized them with drypoint on plastic (that I really do not like so much: I always prefer metal to plastic).

printing the first tree - etching on zinc plate

I was really happy about this time spent there: it gave me the chance to really get concentrate on my project, completely and full-time. I went in the lab in the morning and spent there the whole day printing and etching. There were sometimes problems to solve but the situation and the context were perfect for finding solutions.

You can also see a very nice video of the finished project with animals here, thanks to Jacopo.

They say that there is Costanza ghost sometimes in the alleys of the castles. I did not see her, but at night when I sometimes closed the gate with the heavy iron chain, for sure I felt a breathtaking suspance looking down at the sea and the orizon far away.

'brucia' - typefaces for the cover title
I just realized a new project for the courses 'Xilografia' e 'Progettazione grafica tipografica' kept by Marina Bindella @ Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma.
It is an artist book inspired to a big fire that distroyed the forest in the Dolomities last October.
Each illustration is made by overlapping two or three different linoleum matrices.
The cover is handcoloured with a handmade ink and printed with typefaces.
I hope I will soon find a way to show it somewhere from real! :)

Anna Levine is the author of 'All eyes on Alexandra', the last picture book I illustrated for Kar-Ben Publisher that came out on August 2018.
In the Interview by Nicole Pyles Anna wrote very nice words about my work, and I discovered we are very similar in our creative process.

I think the way she 'enters' the reality she is going to write about is very similar to my way of getting closer to things when I start working on a new project. For example, if I have to draw trees, I go to the park and start sketching trees from real. It is like her pulling her boots and hat on :)
Of course she describes this much better than me in her post, so take a few minutes of your time, have a look and read!
Thanks Anna for your work, and writing these things about my illustrations.

It has been great to look for pictures of cranes last Summer, when I was working on it, to sketch them end to go into the book athmosphere.

Stamperia d'arte Busato in Vicenza is really a wonderful place.
it smells old paper and ink and it is full of great artists' work: etchings and litographies are everywhere and you can walk among different printing presses and heavy litography stones.
I am grateful that Giancarlo let me try litography.
It has been such a great experience!
Here you are some steps.
I also printed some of my etchings - thanks to Valerio, such a great and experienced printer!
